This vulnerability exists within the FaceTime application’s remote control feature on macOS. The core issue is a flaw in the feature’s state management logic. When a user initiates a remote control session over FaceTime to view or operate another device, the system is designed to protect sensitive information. However, due to an improper state handling error, the visual obfuscation (typically asterisks or dots) for password input fields can fail. This causes the actual plaintext characters of a password to be rendered on the screen and transmitted to the remote viewing party. The vulnerability is triggered during the specific context of an active FaceTime screen-sharing session where remote control is enabled. It does not require direct code execution but exploits the visual data stream of the session. The flaw was corrected by Apple through improved state management checks to ensure the masking state for password fields is consistently enforced during remote sessions.
dailycve form:
Platform: Apple macOS
Version: Before 15.7.3
Vulnerability: Information disclosure
Severity: High
date: 2025-12-12
Prediction: 2025-12-12 Patched
What Undercode Say:
No public exploit code or specific bash commands for CVE-2025-43542 are currently available in the searched repositories. The vulnerability is patched.
How Exploit:
An attacker must first establish a FaceTime call with the target and convince the user to enable the “Share Screen” feature with remote control permissions. Once control is granted, if the target user enters a password into any field during the session, the attacker may see the unmasked characters in real-time.
Protection from this CVE:
Apply security updates. Install macOS Sequoia 15.7.3, iOS 18.7.3, or iPadOS 18.7.3. Restrict remote control. Be cautious when granting screen sharing control. Use alternative tools. Consider dedicated secure remote access software for support sessions.
Impact:
Direct credential exposure. Passwords entered during a session can be captured. High confidentiality risk. CVSS v3 score: 7.5 (High). No privilege escalation. The flaw leaks information but does not grant system access or execution rights directly.
