How the mentioned CVE works
The vulnerability is a flaw in the mail header parsing logic within Apple’s Mail framework across multiple operating systems. It stems from insufficient validation when processing incoming email headers. An attacker can exploit this by crafting a malicious email containing specially designed header fields. When the vulnerable Mail client or component receives and attempts to parse this malformed header, it triggers an unexpected condition. This condition leads to a persistent denial-of-service (DoS) state. The “persistent” nature means the affected service or system may become unusable and remain in that state without manual intervention, such as a forced reboot. The attack can be conducted remotely over a network (AV:N) without requiring user privileges (PR:N) or user interaction (UI:N). The vulnerability is classified under CWE-20, which is improper input validation.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: Apple operating systems
Version: Multiple versions before
Vulnerability: Mail header parsing
Severity: High (CVSS 7.5)
Date: 2025-12-12
Prediction: Patched 2025-11-03
What Undercode Say:
Check current macOS version sw_vers -productVersion Simulate checking for vulnerable versions (example logic) if [[ "$os_version" < "14.8.2" ]]; then echo "macOS Sonoma is vulnerable"; fi Inspect mail header structure of a file (basic example) cat suspicious.eml | grep -A 5 -B 5 "^Subject:"
How Exploit:
An attacker sends a specially crafted email to a target device. The exploit payload is contained within the email’s header fields, designed to bypass existing parsing checks. Upon receiving the email, the Mail application processes the malicious header. The flawed parsing logic fails to handle the input correctly, causing a critical error. This error leads to a crash or hang of the mail service, resulting in a persistent denial-of-service that requires a system restart to recover.
Protection from this CVE
Apply the official Apple security updates that contain the improved checks. For macOS Sonoma, update to version 14.8.2. For macOS Sequoia, update to version 15.7.2. For macOS Tahoe, update to version 26.1. For iOS/iPadOS, update to either version 18.7.2 or 26.1 depending on the branch. Update watchOS to 26.1 and visionOS to 26.1. As a temporary network mitigation, implement email gateway filtering to block emails with abnormal or complex headers.
Impact
The primary impact is a persistent denial-of-service, rendering the device’s mail functionality and potentially related services inoperable. This can lead to sustained disruption of communication and productivity. Recovery typically requires manual user intervention, such as restarting the device. The confidentiality and integrity of data are not directly impacted, but the high availability impact scores a 7.5 on the CVSS scale. It affects a wide range of Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and Apple Vision Pro.
