How the CVE Works:
CVE-2024-26925 is a use-after-free flaw in the Linux kernel’s networking subsystem, specifically in the `netfilter` component. When a maliciously crafted packet is processed, it triggers improper cleanup of socket buffers (sk_buff), leaving dangling pointers. An attacker can exploit this to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges or cause a denial-of-service (system crash). The vulnerability arises due to race conditions during garbage collection, where freed memory is incorrectly accessed.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Linux Kernel
Version: Up to 6.6.15
Vulnerability: Use-After-Free
Severity: Critical
Date: 2024-05-12
Prediction: Patch expected by 2024-06-10
What Undercode Say:
Check kernel version: uname -r Exploit PoC detection (log monitoring): dmesg | grep "netfilter: use-after-free" Temporary mitigation (disable module): sudo modprobe -r nf_tables
How Exploit:
- Crafted network packets trigger UAF in
netfilter. - Exploits race condition during `sk_buff` cleanup.
- Leads to RCE or kernel panic.
Protection from this CVE:
- Apply kernel patches >=6.6.16.
- Disable `nf_tables` if unused.
- Restrict untrusted network access.
Impact:
- Full system compromise via root privileges.
- Denial-of-service (kernel crash).
- Bypass of security mechanisms.
