How the CVE Works
CVE-2024-1086 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel’s Netfilter subsystem, specifically in the `nf_tables` component. The flaw occurs when improperly handling batch requests, leading to a dangling pointer reference after memory release. An attacker can exploit this by sending crafted Netfilter rules, triggering the use of freed memory, potentially allowing arbitrary code execution with kernel privileges. The vulnerability stems from insufficient garbage collection in the error-handling path, leaving pointers accessible post-free. Exploitation requires local access but can lead to full system compromise due to kernel-level execution.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: Linux Kernel
Version: 5.14 – 6.6
Vulnerability: Use-After-Free
Severity: Critical
Date: 2024-01-18
Prediction: Patch by 2024-02-15
What Undercode Say
Check kernel version uname -r Verify if vulnerable grep "CONFIG_NF_TABLES" /boot/config-$(uname -r) Mitigation (until patch) sysctl -w kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone=0
How Exploit
1. Local attacker crafts malicious Netfilter batch request.
2. Triggers UAF via erroneous rule removal.
3. Overwrites freed memory with payload.
4. Gains root via kernel-mode execution.
Protection from this CVE
- Update to kernel >=6.6.4.
- Restrict user namespace creation.
- Disable `nf_tables` if unused.
Impact
- Full system compromise.
- Bypasses SELinux/AppArmor.
- Persistent root access.
