Liferay Portal, Improper Access Control, CVE-2025-47140 (Moderate)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability, CVE-2025-47140, stems from an improper access control mechanism within the Batch Engine component of Liferay. This engine handles bulk data import and export tasks via REST APIs. The flaw exists because the system fails to correctly validate a user’s permissions when they request to export data. Normally, the system should check if the authenticated user has the necessary view permissions for the specific data types (e.g., User objects, Blog entries) they are trying to export. However, due to the missing permission check, an attacker can craft a malicious REST API call to the export endpoint. By supplying the identifier for a data export task, even one they did not create, the system will return the sensitive data contained within that export package. This allows a remote authenticated user to exfiltrate any data that has been exported via the Batch Engine, bypassing intended security controls.
