DNN, Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), CVE-2025-XXXXX (Moderate)

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2025-XXXXX vulnerability in DNN arises from inadequate sanitization of user-supplied input within the profile URL path. When a user visits a specially crafted link pointing to a user profile page, malicious script code embedded within the URL parameters is not properly neutralized by the application’s input filtering mechanisms. DNN’s template rendering engine then reflects this unsanitized input directly into the HTML output of the generated profile page. Since the application fails to encode HTML-metacharacters, the victim’s browser executes the injected JavaScript in the context of the DNN site. This allows an attacker to steal session cookies, deface pages, or perform actions on behalf of the authenticated user without needing to store the payload on the server.
Platform: DNN (DotNetNuke)
Version: (Specific versions affected; details pending)
Vulnerability: Reflected XSS
Severity: Moderate

date: 2025-09-23

Prediction: Patch expected by 2025-10-15

What Undercode Say:

`curl -s “https://example.com/profile/[bash]” | grep -i “script”`

`!/bin/bash`

` Check for unencoded URL parameters in response`

`payload=”“`

`response=$(curl -s -G –data-urlencode “param=$payload” “$TARGET_URL”)`

`if echo “$response” | grep -q “$payload”; then echo “Potential XSS”; fi`

How Exploit:

Attacker crafts a malicious URL: `https://victim-dnn-site.com/profile/user/[malicious-script]`. The attacker tricks a logged-in user into clicking this link. The server reflects the script into the page, and the user’s browser executes it, potentially hijacking their session.

Protection from this CVE:

Apply vendor patch. Implement strict input validation on all URL parameters. Encode user-controlled data before output. Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers.

Impact:

Session hijacking, unauthorized actions on behalf of the user, page defacement.
