LibHTP, Memory Leak Vulnerability, CVE-2025-53537 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works:

CVE-2025-53537 affects LibHTP (versions ≤0.5.50), a critical component for HTTP traffic parsing. The vulnerability stems from improper memory handling during LZMA-compressed HTTP traffic processing. Attackers can exploit this by sending specially crafted HTTP requests with malicious LZMA payloads, triggering a memory leak. Repeated exploitation exhausts system memory, causing denial-of-service (DoS) and loss of visibility in security monitoring tools like Suricata. The flaw resides in libhtp’s default LZMA decompression logic, where allocated memory fails to release after processing.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: LibHTP
Version: ≤0.5.50
Vulnerability: Memory Leak
Severity: Critical
Date: 08/05/2025

Prediction: Patch by 09/2025

What Undercode Say:

Analytics:

suricata -T -c suricata.yaml Test config
grep "lzma-enabled" /etc/suricata/suricata.yaml Verify workaround

Exploit:

import requests
requests.post(target, headers={"Content-Encoding": "lzma"}, data=malicious_lzma)

Protection:

  • Disable LZMA: `app-layer.protocols.http.libhtp.default-config.lzma-enabled: false`
    – Upgrade to LibHTP 0.5.51+

Impact:

  • DoS via memory exhaustion
  • Security monitoring bypass
