How the CVE Works
The vulnerability resides in the AIX Network Installation Manager (NIM) server service (nimesis). This service does not properly sanitize user-supplied input within a URL request. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can exploit this by sending a specially crafted HTTP request containing sequences like `../` (dot-dot-slash). This manipulation allows the attacker to break out of the intended directory and traverse the server’s file system arbitrarily. The flaw is not just for reading files; it grants the ability to write data to any location accessible by the `nimesis` service process. By leveraging this, an attacker can overwrite critical system files, deposit malicious executables, or alter configurations to achieve full system compromise, effectively taking control of the AIX or VIOS operating system.
