How the CVE Works
The vulnerability exists within the Network Installation Management (NIM) component of IBM AIX and VIOS. The system insecurely stores the NIM private keys on the local filesystem. These keys are used for authentication between NIM masters and clients. Instead of being held in a protected, privileged location, the keys are stored with permissions that allow unauthorized local users, or potentially remote attackers, to read them. An attacker who gains access to these private keys can use them to impersonate a trusted NIM client or master. This enables a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack, allowing the attacker to intercept, manipulate, or disrupt software installations and system updates orchestrated by NIM, potentially leading to further system compromise.
DailyCVE
Platform: IBM AIX/VIOS
Version: 7.2, 7.3, 3.1, 4.1
Vulnerability: Insecure Key Storage
Severity: Critical
date: 11/13/2025
Prediction: Expected Patch: Q1 2026
What Undercode Say:
` Check file permissions on NIM directories`
`ls -la /etc/nim/`
` Look for private key files`
`find /etc/nim -name “.key” -o -name “.pem”`
` Example command to check if a user can read a key`
`sudo -u cat /etc/nim/priv/key.pem`
How Exploit:
An attacker with local shell access, even as an unprivileged user, locates and exfiltrates the poorly protected NIM private keys. These keys are then used to authenticate to the NIM master as a trusted client, allowing the attacker to receive and potentially alter software packages being deployed.
Protection from this CVE
Apply IBM-provided security patches when available. Until a patch is released, restrict local user access to the system and audit file permissions on the `/etc/nim` directory and its contents, ensuring private keys are only readable by root.
Impact:
Full system compromise via code injection, unauthorized software deployment, and breach of trust in the software update process, leading to a complete loss of system integrity.
