How the CVE Works
CVE-2024-3521 exploits Helm’s JSON Schema validation by crafting a malicious `values.schema.json` file containing a `$ref` pointer to a resource like `/dev/zero` or another unbounded data source. When Helm processes this file, it attempts to resolve the reference recursively, consuming all available memory. This leads to an out-of-memory (OOM) crash, disrupting cluster operations. Attackers can embed such schemas in Helm charts to trigger denial-of-service conditions.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: Helm
Version: <3.18.5
Vulnerability: Memory exhaustion
Severity: Critical
Date: 2024-06-10
Prediction: Patch expected by 2024-06-20
What Undercode Say
Check Helm version helm version --short Scan for malicious $ref grep -r "\$ref./dev/" ./charts Mitigation command helm upgrade --install --version 3.18.5
How Exploit
1. Attacker crafts `values.schema.json` with `$ref: /dev/zero`.
2. Victim installs malicious chart.
3. Helm resolves `$ref` recursively, exhausting memory.
Protection from this CVE
- Upgrade to Helm v3.18.5+.
- Audit charts for suspicious
