Frappe, Path Traversal, CVE-2025-66206 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2025-66206 vulnerability is a path traversal issue in the Frappe web framework. It affects versions before 15.86.0 and 14.99.2. When Frappe is run directly with werkzeug or gunicorn without a reverse proxy, certain request handlers fail to properly sanitize user-input file paths. Attackers can exploit this by crafting HTTP requests containing directory traversal sequences like “../” or “..\”. These sequences allow accessing files outside the intended web root directory. For example, a request to “/../../etc/passwd” could retrieve system files. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient path validation in static file serving or routing logic. It enables unauthorized reading of sensitive server files, including configuration files, environment files, source code, and credentials. The flaw is particularly critical in default development deployments. Fixed versions implement robust path normalization, preventing traversal beyond allowed directories. Sites behind reverse proxies like NGINX are unaffected as the proxy blocks such malicious requests. Exploitation requires knowledge of the full file path on the server. The fix was applied in Frappe 15.86.0 and 14.99.2 through improved security checks.
