Fortinet FortiSandbox, OS Command Injection, CVE-2025-53949 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

CVE-2025-53949 is an OS command injection vulnerability in Fortinet FortiSandbox, originating from improper input sanitization in the web management interface. Authenticated attackers can exploit this by sending crafted HTTP requests containing malicious payloads. The application fails to neutralize special elements like semicolons, backticks, or pipes in user-supplied parameters that are used to construct OS commands. This allows injection of arbitrary commands executed with the web server’s privileges, typically leading to full system compromise. The vulnerability affects multiple versions due to a common flaw where input validation is bypassed during command execution. Specifically, endpoints that handle system tasks directly incorporate user input into functions like system() or exec() without validation. Attackers can escalate from simple command confirmation to severe actions such as reading sensitive files, modifying configurations, or launching reverse shells. The requirement for authentication limits some exposure, but compromised credentials or insider threats make exploitation feasible. Patches must enforce strict input validation and use secure APIs for command execution to mitigate the risk.
