This vulnerability arises from inadequate access control mechanisms within Fortinet FortiAuthenticator’s administrative interface. Specifically, the system fails to properly enforce privilege restrictions for users with read-only admin permissions. When an authenticated attacker possessing at least read-only access crafts malicious HTTP requests to certain API endpoints, the system incorrectly processes these requests. This allows the attacker to bypass intended authorization checks and access sensitive data. The targeted data includes credentials for messaging services associated with other administrator accounts. These credentials might be stored in configuration files or databases accessible via the web interface. The flaw is present in multiple versions of the software, from 6.3 through 6.6.4, indicating a systemic oversight in authorization validation. Attackers can exploit this by sending specially crafted GET or POST requests to paths that handle messaging service settings. The server, due to missing or weak permission verification, returns credential information in the response. This enables information disclosure that could lead to full account compromise. The vulnerability highlights the risks of improper input validation and access control in multi-user administrative systems. It underscores the need for rigorous testing of privilege boundaries in authentication platforms.
