Drupal, Authentication Bypass, CVE-2025-XXXXX (Moderate)

Listen to this Post

The CVE in the Drupal Email TFA module is an Authentication Bypass vulnerability. It functions by exploiting an alternate path or channel during the two-factor authentication process. Specifically, the flaw exists in how the module handles state validation after a user submits their one-time code sent via email. An attacker can manipulate the authentication flow by intercepting or bypassing the state check that occurs after the initial username and password are verified. This allows the attacker to skip the second factor entirely, gaining unauthorized access to the account without needing to provide the valid TFA code. The vulnerability stems from insufficient validation of the user’s session state when proceeding to the next step after the initial login, permitting a path that circumvents the intended email code verification.
Platform: Drupal
Version: <2.0.6
Vulnerability: Authentication Bypass
Severity: Moderate
date: 2024-11-18

Prediction: 2024-12-02

What Undercode Say:

git clone https://github.com/drupal/email_tfa.git
cd email_tfa
git log --oneline --grep="security"
// Code snippet illustrating weak state validation
if ($_SESSION['tfa_validated']) {
// Grant access without actually checking the email code.
user_login_finalize($account);
}

How Exploit:

1. Attacker obtains valid user credentials.

2. Initiates login, triggering email TFA code.

  1. Intercepts or bypasses the state check before code submission.

4. Accesses account dashboard without the second factor.

Protection from this CVE
