D-Link DIR-825, Stack-based Buffer Overflow, CVE-2025-8949 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How CVE-2025-8949 Works

The vulnerability exists in the `get_ping_app_stat` function within `ping_response.cgi` of the D-Link DIR-825’s HTTP server (httpd). Attackers can exploit this flaw by sending a specially crafted `ping_ipaddr` argument, triggering a stack-based buffer overflow due to insufficient input validation. Since the device is no longer supported, no official patch exists, leaving systems exposed to remote code execution (RCE) attacks. The exploit leverages unchecked buffer boundaries when processing ping requests, allowing attackers to overwrite critical stack memory and potentially take full control of the device.

DailyCVE Form

Platform: D-Link DIR-825
Version: 2.10
Vulnerability: Stack Overflow
Severity: Critical
Date: 08/18/2025

Prediction: No patch expected

What Undercode Say

Analytics:

curl -X POST http://<TARGET>/ping_response.cgi -d "ping_ipaddr=$(python -c 'print("A"500)')"
import requests
payload = "A" 500
requests.post("http://<TARGET>/ping_response.cgi", data={"ping_ipaddr": payload})

How Exploit

1. Craft oversized `ping_ipaddr` payload.

2. Send via HTTP POST to `ping_response.cgi`.

3. Overflow corrupts stack memory.

4. Execute arbitrary shellcode.

Protection from this CVE

  • Disable HTTP admin interface.
  • Segment network access.
  • Replace unsupported hardware.

Impact

  • Remote code execution.
  • Full device compromise.
