CVE-2024-4422 is a vulnerability involving the incorrect validation of Package URL (purl) identifiers within the CVE Binary Tool. The flaw stems from improper parsing and validation logic when processing package identifiers and companion files during software composition analysis and dependency scanning. Because the validation mechanism fails to correctly enforce strict syntax and component boundaries for certain purl strings, malformed or maliciously crafted component identifiers can bypass expected checks. This allows inaccurate version matching, improper vendor attribution, or mishandled dependency data during SBOM parsing and vulnerability database lookups, potentially leading to incorrect security assessment results or flawed triage decisions.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: CVE Binary Tool
Version: 3.4rc2
Vulnerability : Purl Validation Flaw
Severity: Medium
date: 2024-08-01
Prediction: 2024-08-15
What Undercode Say:
pip install cve-bin-tool==3.4rc2 cve-bin-tool --vex-file vex.json /path/to/scan
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
malformed_purl = "pkg:deb/debian/[email protected]?arch=invalidmalformed" Triggering validation parsing routine with invalid purl structure from cve_bin_tool.spparser import validate_purl validate_purl(malformed_purl)
Protection:
Upgrade to CVE Binary Tool version 3.4.1 or later where purl validation logic is strictly enforced.
Impact:
Misleading security report outcomes, potential false negatives, or improper vulnerability suppression during SBOM analysis.
