The CVE-2025-XXXXX vulnerability in Bouncy Castle for Java stems from improper handling of ASN.1 object identifiers in the `ASN1ObjectIdentifier.java` file. Attackers can craft malicious ASN.1 data that triggers excessive memory allocation due to unchecked resource consumption. This occurs when parsing specially constructed OID (Object Identifier) values, leading to uncontrolled heap memory growth. The issue affects all API modules, allowing denial-of-service (DoS) conditions by exhausting available system resources. The flaw resides in the core module, where input validation fails to enforce reasonable bounds on memory allocation during OID processing.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Bouncy Castle Java
Version: 1.0 – 2.0.0
Vulnerability: Excessive Allocation
Severity: Moderate
Date: Aug 12, 2025
Prediction: Patch by Sep 2025
What Undercode Say:
Check installed Bouncy Castle version:
java -cp bcprov-jdk18on-.jar org.bouncycastle.Version
Exploit PoC (simulated OID flood):
openssl asn1parse -genstr OID:1.3.6.1.4.1.$(python -c "print('1.'10000)")
How Exploit:
- Crafted ASN.1 OID payloads
- Memory exhaustion via recursive parsing
- DoS via sustained high allocation
Protection from this CVE:
- Upgrade to BC 2.1.0+
- Input validation for OID length
- JVM heap limits enforcement
Impact:
- System instability
- Service disruption
- Resource starvation
