Apache Zeppelin: Arbitrary File Read via Malicious JDBC Connection String (CVE-2024-31864, Moderate)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works

Apache Zeppelin versions 0.11.1 to before 0.12.0 suffer from improper input validation in JDBC connection string handling. Attackers can exploit this by crafting a URL-encoded JDBC string to bypass security checks. When a malicious string is processed, Zeppelin fails to properly sanitize the input, allowing unauthorized file read access on the server. The vulnerability stems from incomplete fixes in prior patches, which did not account for encoded payloads.
