Apache Jackrabbit, Blind XXE Vulnerability, CVE-2025-XXXXX (High)

Listen to this Post

Apache Jackrabbit’s `jackrabbit-spi-commons` and `jackrabbit-core` components are vulnerable to blind XXE (XML External Entity) attacks due to insecure document parsing. The vulnerability arises when processing XML input without proper entity resolution restrictions, allowing attackers to inject malicious external entities. This can lead to sensitive data exfiltration, server-side request forgery (SSRF), or denial of service. The flaw exists in versions before 2.20.17, 2.22.1, and 2.23.2-beta, where the XML parser fails to disable external entity references. Attackers exploit this by crafting a malicious XML file containing a reference to an external system, which the parser resolves, enabling data leakage or remote resource access.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Apache Jackrabbit
Version: < 2.20.17
Vulnerability: Blind XXE
Severity: High
Date: Jul 14, 2025

Prediction: Patch by Jul 21, 2025

What Undercode Say:

<!-- Malicious XXE payload example -->
<!DOCTYPE foo [ <!ENTITY xxe SYSTEM "file:///etc/passwd"> ]>
<foo>&xxe;</foo>
// Vulnerable XML parsing in Jackrabbit
DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
DocumentBuilder builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder(); // Unsafe by default

How Exploit:

  • Craft XXE payload in uploaded XML.
  • Trigger parsing via document import.
  • Exfiltrate data via outbound requests.

Protection from this CVE:

  • Update to 2.20.17/2.22.1/2.23.2-beta.
  • Disable DTDs in DocumentBuilderFactory.
  • Use setFeature("http://apache.org/xml/features/disallow-doctype-decl", true).

Impact:

  • Data leakage (files, network).
  • SSRF attacks.
  • System compromise.
