How the mentioned CVE works:
The Xtooltech Xtool AnyScan Android application version 4.40.40 and prior embeds a static cryptographic key and initialization vector (IV) within its code. This hardcoded key is used to decrypt update metadata fetched from remote servers during the update process. An attacker intercepting network traffic, such as through a man-in-the-middle position, can capture the encrypted update manifest. Since the key is fixed and easily extractable via reverse engineering, the attacker can decrypt the manifest using tools like OpenSSL or custom scripts. After decryption, the attacker modifies the manifest to change the download URL or package hash to point to a malicious update file. The manipulated manifest is then re-encrypted using the same hardcoded key and IV. When the application receives this tampered manifest, it successfully decrypts it with the embedded key, trusting the content. This causes the application to download and install the malicious update from an attacker-controlled server. The flaw allows arbitrary code execution, device compromise, and data theft, bypassing intended update security. The vulnerability arises from insecure key management and lack of encryption integrity checks.
