WSO2 carbon-apimgt, Authenticated Stored Cross-Site Scripting, CVE-2025-XXXXX (Moderate)

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2025-XXXXX vulnerability in WSO2 carbon-apimgt arises from insufficient input sanitization within the API Publisher portal’s document upload feature. An authenticated user with ‘publisher’ role privileges can upload a maliciously crafted API document (e.g., a Markdown file). The backend fails to properly validate and encode user-supplied content before it is persisted in storage. When another authenticated user, such as an administrator, later views this uploaded document in the web interface, the embedded JavaScript payload is rendered and executed by the victim’s browser. This occurs because the application unsafely injects the stored document content into the HTML document object model (DOM) without appropriate output encoding. The exploitation is stored, meaning the payload remains on the server and impacts every user who accesses the compromised resource. The severity is mitigated because session cookies are protected by the `httpOnly` flag, preventing direct theft of authentication tokens.
Platform: WSO2 API Manager
Version: Multiple products
Vulnerability: Stored XSS
Severity: Moderate

date: 2025-09-23

Prediction: Patch by 2025-10-14

What Undercode Say:

`curl -H “Authorization: Bearer ” -F “file=@malicious_doc.md” https:///api/am/publisher/v4/apis//documents`
``

`grep -r “document\.content” ./carbon-apimgt/components/`

How Exploit:

An attacker with publisher access uploads a malicious API document containing a script payload. The payload executes in the context of a victim admin viewing the document, allowing UI manipulation or data exfiltration.

Protection from this CVE:

Implement strict input validation and context-aware output encoding for all user-supplied content rendered in the Publisher UI.

Impact:

Unauthorized UI modifications, redirection to malicious sites, exfiltration of browser-accessible data. Session hijacking is prevented by `httpOnly` cookies.
