The CVE-2025-28979 vulnerability stems from improper sanitization of file paths in the WP Pipes WordPress plugin, specifically within include() or require() PHP statements. In affected versions up to 1.4.3, user-controlled inputs are directly used in file inclusion functions without validation, allowing attackers to manipulate parameters like ‘file’ or ‘page’ to perform path traversal. By injecting directory sequences such as ‘../../../’, an attacker can force the plugin to include local files from the server’s filesystem, like /etc/passwd or WordPress configuration files. This local file inclusion (LFI) can lead to sensitive information disclosure. If the included file contains PHP code or if PHP wrappers are enabled, it may result in remote code execution (RCE), compromising the entire web server. The exploit typically involves sending crafted HTTP requests to vulnerable endpoints, leveraging lack of input filtering and secure coding practices. This vulnerability is particularly severe in shared hosting environments where file permissions might be permissive, enabling horizontal movement across sites.
