CVE-2026-58608 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability residing in the Windows Print Spooler components. The flaw is rooted in a classic race condition—specifically, improper synchronization of shared resources during concurrent operations, which Microsoft also identifies as a use-after-free memory-safety error. At its core, the Print Spooler service handles multiple concurrent print jobs and printer configuration changes without adequate mutual exclusion controls or atomic operations. When multiple threads or processes attempt to access and modify shared print queue data structures simultaneously, the lack of proper serialization creates a temporal window where the state of these resources becomes inconsistent. An attacker who is already authenticated with low-level privileges can exploit this window by crafting malicious print jobs or printer driver installations. The attack works by manipulating the shared memory regions—such as printer queue entries, driver configurations, or security descriptors—between the time a security check is performed and the time the action is executed (a time-of-check to time-of-use flaw). This allows the attacker to inject arbitrary code into the print spooler process memory space. The vulnerability is network-accessible, requires no user interaction, and has low attack complexity, making it highly dangerous.
