Windows, Out-of-bounds Write, CVE-2026-96235 (High) -DC-Oct2026-3186

Listen to this Post

Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation contains a critical security flaw residing within the Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime component. Specifically, crafted WPF pixel-shader bytecode can manipulate and desynchronize the two distinct parsing passes performed inside CPSTrans::Initialize. When these parsing passes fail to synchronize correctly during bytecode evaluation, it directly triggers heap out-of-bounds reads or writes. An attacker can exploit this behavior by tricking a user into processing maliciously crafted graphical or shader data, potentially leading to unauthorized memory access or arbitrary code execution within the context of the application. Developers are strongly urged to update their .NET runtime environments and affected package dependencies immediately to mitigate potential exploitation risks.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Windows
Version: .NET 8.0, 9.0, 10.0, 11.0
Vulnerability: Out-of-bounds Write
Severity: High
date: 10/13/2026

Prediction: 10/13/2026

What Undercode Say:

Bash Commands and Codes

dotnet --info
dotnet add package Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime --version 8.0.32
dotnet restore

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

The vulnerability exists because CPSTrans::Initialize executes a two-pass parsing mechanism on WPF pixel-shader bytecode without enforcing rigorous state synchronization checks between passes. By supplying a specially crafted shader file containing malformed chunk lengths or conflicting header declarations, an attacker causes the first pass to allocate buffer sizes based on one set of metrics while the second pass writes data based on a mismatched count. This discrepancy bypasses boundary validations, resulting in heap out-of-bounds memory corruption.

Protection:

Update all affected .NET Windows Desktop Runtime packages to their respective patched versions (such as 8.0.32, 9.0.21, 10.0.13, or 11.0.0-rc.2) using the .NET CLI or Visual Studio. Ensure that any deployed self-contained applications are fully recompiled with the updated SDK and redeployed to target environments.

Impact:

Successful exploitation of this out-of-bounds write vulnerability can allow local or remote code execution depending on the application attack surface, leading to full confidentiality, integrity, and availability compromise of the vulnerable client application.
