This vulnerability exists within the Windows Desktop Window Manager (DWM) core graphics component. DWM is responsible for desktop composition and rendering visual effects. The flaw is a local information disclosure issue where DWM fails to properly sanitize or clear sensitive data from allocated memory buffers before reusing or releasing them. An authorized local attacker can exploit this condition. By executing a specially crafted application, the attacker triggers a race condition or a specific sequence of window manager operations. This causes DWM to write sensitive information, such as fragments of process memory, texture data, or window content from other applications, into a memory space accessible to the attacker’s low-privileged process. The vulnerability does not allow code execution or privilege escalation directly. However, the leaked data could contain secrets like passwords, keys, or documents fragments from other running software. The attack complexity is low, requiring only local access and user privileges. The exploitation relies on predictable memory handling within the dwm.exe process. Successful exploitation leads to the confidentiality of data from the compromised DWM process memory space being breached.
