Windows Desktop App Runtime, Information Disclosure Vulnerability, CVE-2026-96229 (Moderate) -DC-Oct2026-3188

Listen to this Post

This security vulnerability affects Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime (WPF) components across multiple .NET versions, stemming from permissive input validation and handling weaknesses categorized under CWE-183. Specifically, attackers can leverage flaws in XAML and XPS parsing layers where restrictive security checks fail to adequately block unsafe Uniform Resource Identifier fetching, improper hyperlink navigation state propagation, and uncontrolled nesting depths. Furthermore, caching mechanisms can improperly retain positive DNS zone-policy decisions or mishandle TrueType font protections. When exploited via malicious remote inputs or user interaction, these weaknesses facilitate unauthorized information disclosure over the network without requiring privileged access, necessitating immediate updates to patched runtime versions.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Windows .NET WPF
Version: .NET 8.0 to 11.0
Vulnerability : Information Disclosure
Severity: Moderate
date: 10/13/2026

Prediction: 10/13/2026

What Undercode Say:

Bash Commands and Codes

dotnet --info
dotnet add package Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime --version 9.0.21

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

The vulnerability is triggered when an application parses crafted XAML or XPS files containing malicious URIs or deep nesting structures. An attacker induces a victim to open or navigate through untrusted content, allowing the parser to improperly fetch external resources or leak internal state via hyperlinks and DNS zone policy caching flaws.

Protection:

Update all affected .NET SDKs and runtime packages to the patched versions (such as 8.0.32, 9.0.21, 10.0.13, or 11.0.0-rc.2) or higher. Restart applications and recompile any deployed self-contained applications targeting impacted versions.

Impact:

Successful exploitation over a network allows unauthorized actors to achieve information disclosure, compromising confidentiality without affecting integrity or availability.
