Windows, Deserialization of Untrusted Data, CVE-2026-83520 (High) -DC-Oct2026-3181

Listen to this Post

This security vulnerability affects Microsoft .NET projects utilizing the Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime (WPF) package across multiple versions. The underlying issue stems from insufficient input handling and deserialization flaws within restrictive XAML and XPS implementations. Specifically, malicious actors can craft specialized inputs that bypass URI fetching and navigation restrictions, manipulate hyperlink states incorrectly, exploit TrueType font parsing weaknesses, or trigger excessive nesting depths. Furthermore, caching flaws regarding positive DNS zone-policy decisions allow attackers to direct application traffic or resources maliciously. When an unsuspecting user interacts with a crafted document or navigates through an untrusted hyperlink inside a vulnerable WPF application, remote code execution can be achieved, compromising the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the host system.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Windows Desktop Runtime
Version: .NET 8.0 to 11.0
Vulnerability : Deserialization of Data
Severity: High
date: 10/13/2026

Prediction: 2026-10-13

What Undercode Say

The vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-83520 highlights critical architectural risks in WPF applications regarding how external resources and untrusted XAML/XPS components are parsed. Developers must audit package references immediately.

dotnet --info
dotnet list package --vulnerable
dotnet add package Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.Runtime --version 11.0.0-rc.2

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

An attacker supplies a specially crafted XAML or XPS file containing malformed hyperlink structures or deep nesting hierarchies. When processed by the WPF runtime, the application improperly handles URI fetching or hits unmanaged memory boundaries, leading to arbitrary code execution under the context of the user running the desktop application.

Protection: from this CVE

To protect applications against CVE-2026-83520, developers must update their .NET SDK and runtime packages to the patched versions (such as 8.0.32, 9.0.21, 10.0.13, or 11.0.0-rc.2 depending on the major version used). Self-contained deployments must be fully recompiled and redeployed after applying the updated runtime dependencies.

Impact:

Successful exploitation of this remote code execution vulnerability can allow an unauthorized attacker to gain user-level control over the target machine, leading to complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data processed within the affected WPF application.
