Windows Common Log File System Driver, Elevation of Privilege, CVE-2024-30054 (High)

Listen to this Post

This CVE describes an elevation of privilege vulnerability in the Windows Common Log File System (CLFS) driver. The vulnerability arises from improper handling of objects in memory by the CLFS driver, specifically a use-after-free condition. An attacker who has already gained low-privileged access to a system can exploit this flaw by running a specially crafted application. The application manipulates the CLFS objects in a way that frees a memory pointer but leaves a dangling reference. When the driver subsequently uses this freed memory, it corrupts kernel memory. By carefully controlling the data written to this memory region, the attacker can execute arbitrary code in the context of the kernel, leading to full SYSTEM privilege escalation, thereby taking complete control of the affected system.
Platform: Windows
Version: Multiple versions

Vulnerability : Privilege Escalation

Severity: High

date: 2024-05-14

Prediction: 2024-06-11

What Undercode Say:

whoami /priv
sc query clfs
ver
include <windows.h>
// Code to craft malicious CLFS log...
HANDLE hLog = CreateLogFile(...);
// ... operations to trigger UAF ...

How Exploit:

Low-privileged user executes crafted application, application manipulates CLFS log objects to trigger use-after-free, controlled data overwrites freed kernel memory, arbitrary code executes as SYSTEM.

Protection from this CVE

Apply Microsoft security update for CVE-2024-30054. Disable unnecessary user privileges. Enforce principle of least privilege. Use application control to block unknown binaries.

Impact:

Complete system compromise. Attacker gains SYSTEM-level privileges. Bypasses security controls. Enables persistence and lateral movement.
