How CVE-2025-22222 Works
VMware Aria Operations suffers from an information disclosure flaw where non-admin users can access credentials for outbound plugins if they know a valid service credential ID. The vulnerability arises due to improper access controls in the plugin credential management system. Attackers exploit this by sending crafted API requests with known credential IDs, forcing the application to return sensitive authentication details. The lack of proper validation allows unauthorized retrieval of these credentials, potentially leading to further system compromise.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: VMware Aria Operations
Version: 8.x, 9.x
Vulnerability: Information Disclosure
Severity: Critical
Date: 05/14/2025
What Undercode Say:
Exploitation Analysis:
1. Identify Valid Credential IDs:
- Query internal APIs (
/api/credentials/list) to enumerate IDs.
2. Craft Malicious Request:
curl -X GET "https://<target>/api/credentials/get?id=KNOWN_ID" -H "Authorization: Bearer <JWT>"
3. Extract Credentials:
- Response includes cleartext credentials for outbound plugins.
Protection Measures:
1. Patch: Apply VMware Security Advisory VMSA-2025-0001.
2. Restrict API Access:
location /api/credentials {
deny all;
allow <admin_IP>;
}
3. Audit Logs:
grep "GET /api/credentials" /var/log/vmware/aria/access.log
4. Rotate Credentials:
aria-cli credentials rotate --all
Detection Commands:
- Check Vulnerable Version:
rpm -q vmware-aria-operations | grep -E "8.|9."
- Monitor Suspicious Activity:
tail -f /var/log/vmware/aria/audit.log | grep "Unauthorized credential access"
Mitigation Script (Temporary):
import requests
headers = {"Authorization": "Bearer <VALID_TOKEN>"}
response = requests.get("https://localhost/api/credentials/disable-all", headers=headers)
print(response.text)
CVSS 4.0 Metrics:
- Attack Vector: Network
- Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low
- User Interaction: None
- Impact: High (Confidentiality)
