How the CVE Works
The vulnerability, CVE-2024-XXXX, resides in the access control mechanism of the memos application’s reaction deletion feature. The application’s backend API endpoint responsible for handling DELETE requests to remove reactions (e.g., /api/v1/memo/{memo_id}/reaction/{reaction_id}) fails to perform proper authorization checks. When a low-privileged authenticated user sends a request to this endpoint, the application only validates that the user is logged in but does not verify if the reaction targeted for deletion belongs to them or is attached to one of their own memos. The system incorrectly assumes that any authenticated session is authorized to delete any reaction ID. This allows an attacker to enumerate or guess valid reaction IDs associated with other users’ memos and submit crafted HTTP DELETE requests to remove them arbitrarily, violating data integrity and user trust without requiring elevated permissions.
dailycve form:
Platform: usememos
Version: v0.25.2
Vulnerability: Arbitrary Reaction Deletion
Severity: Moderate
date: Dec 8, 2025
Prediction: Patch by Dec 16, 2025
What Undercode Say:
Analytics:
curl -X DELETE 'http://target.com/api/v1/memo/123/reaction/456' -H "Cookie: session=attacker_session"
grep -r "delete.reaction" routes/ api/
// Flawed endpoint logic pseudocode
app.delete('/api/v1/memo/:memoId/reaction/:reactionId', (req, res) => {
if (req.user) { // ONLY checks authentication, not ownership
deleteReaction(req.params.reactionId);
res.sendStatus(200);
}
});
How Exploit:
Attacker authenticates with a basic account. They then discover a target reaction ID through other API responses or enumeration. Finally, they send a forged DELETE request to the vulnerable endpoint with the captured reaction ID, successfully deleting another user’s reaction.
Protection from this CVE
Implement proper authorization. Verify reaction ownership. Patch to v0.25.3+. Use middleware for resource checks.
Impact:
Data integrity loss. User experience disruption. Potential trust erosion.
