The vulnerability exists within the verifier component of Triton VM, a zero-knowledge virtual machine. It specifically affects the Fast Reed-Solomon Interactive Oracle Proofs (FRI) sub-protocol, a critical layer for achieving succinctness in STARK proofs. During the FRI commitment phase, the verifier is responsible for sampling random field elements. These random challenges are essential for binding the prover to a specific polynomial. In affected versions, the randomness sampling logic was flawed, potentially causing predictable or deterministic challenge generation. A malicious prover can analyze the flawed sampling algorithm to predict or manipulate the upcoming verifier challenges. With this knowledge, the prover can construct fraudulent Merkle tree commitments and FRI query responses that align with the predictable challenge sequence. This allows the prover to generate a proof for an arbitrary, false statement that will pass all subsequent verifier checks. The core failure is a complete breakdown of computational soundness, as the verifier accepts invalid proofs. The security guarantee of the proof system is entirely compromised when using the supplied verifier. Protocols deploying their own independent verifier implementation may avoid this flaw. The fix ensures cryptographically strong randomness is sampled at each required step, restoring proper soundness.
