ThimPress WP Pipes, Cross-site Scripting, CVE-2025-28977 (medium)

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2025-28977 vulnerability is a reflected Cross-site Scripting (XSS) issue in the ThimPress WP Pipes WordPress plugin. It arises from improper input neutralization during web page generation. The plugin fails to sanitize user-supplied parameters before echoing them into HTTP responses. This allows attackers to inject malicious JavaScript code via crafted URLs. The vulnerability is reflected because the injected script is immediately returned in the server’s response. Attackers can exploit this by embedding payloads in query strings or form inputs. When a victim clicks a malicious link, the script executes in their browser. This can lead to session hijacking by stealing cookies or tokens. It may also allow attackers to perform actions on behalf of the user. The vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 1.4.3. The root cause is the lack of output encoding in plugin functions. Specifically, input passed through certain parameters is not escaped. WordPress functions like esc_html() are not utilized, leading to raw output. This flaw enables the injection of arbitrary HTML and JavaScript. Exploitation requires user interaction, such as clicking a link. However, phishing campaigns can easily facilitate this. The severity is medium due to the need for user involvement. Mitigation involves updating to a patched version or applying input validation. Developers should implement proper escaping techniques in code. Administrators can monitor for suspicious requests to detect attacks.
