How the mentioned CVE works:
CVE-2025-20382 is an unvalidated redirect vulnerability affecting Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud Platform. It impacts versions before 10.0.2, 9.4.6, 9.3.8, and 9.2.10 for Enterprise, and before 10.1.2507.10, 10.0.2503.8, and 9.3.2411.120 for Cloud. A low-privileged user without “admin” or “power” roles can create a views dashboard within Splunk. This dashboard allows a custom background using the `data:image/png;base64` protocol to embed images via base64 encoding. By crafting a specially designed URL within this data URI, the attacker bypasses Splunk’s external URL warning mechanism. Normally, Splunk alerts users about external redirects, but this vulnerability circumvents that check. When a victim views the dashboard, the background image loads, and the embedded URL triggers a redirect to an external malicious site. Exploitation requires phishing, as the victim must be tricked into initiating the request through their browser. The authenticated user cannot exploit this at will; it demands user interaction. This flaw abuses the data URI scheme to perform unvalidated redirects, potentially leading to security risks like credential theft or malware distribution. The core issue is insufficient validation of URLs in dashboard backgrounds.
