How the CVE works:
In Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud Platform, distributed search environments use search heads and peers for data indexing. The ‘change_authentication’ capability is a high-privilege role feature allowing authentication changes. However, in vulnerable versions, this capability incorrectly permits access to network configuration functions. When adding a new search peer via the search head, the system inadvertently discloses internal IP addresses and network ports. This occurs through REST API endpoints like ‘/services/search/distributed/peers’. During the peer addition process, the application performs network scans or returns error messages that leak sensitive topology information. Attackers with authenticated access and this capability can craft HTTP requests to these endpoints. By analyzing responses, they enumerate internal assets, revealing network structure. The flaw stems from inadequate access controls and input validation in the search peer management code. This information disclosure aids lateral movement and further attacks within the network. Patches fix this by restricting the capability and sanitizing responses to prevent data exposure.
Platform: Splunk Enterprise Cloud
Version: Below specified versions
Vulnerability: IP port enumeration
Severity: Medium
Date: 03 December 2025
Prediction: Patch December 2025
What Undercode Say:
Analytics:
curl -k -u “user:pass” “https://target:8089/services/search/distributed/peers” -X POST
grep -Eo ‘([0-9]{1,3}\.){3}[0-9]{1,3}’ response.log
python3 -c “import re; data=open(‘resp.txt’).read(); print(re.findall(r’\d+\.\d+\.\d+\.\d+:\d+’, data))”
How Exploit:
Authenticated user accesses API. Adds search peers repeatedly. Analyzes responses for IPs.
Protection from this CVE:
Upgrade to fixed versions. Restrict high-privilege capabilities. Implement network monitoring.
Impact:
Internal network topology disclosure. Aids further attack planning.
