How CVE-2025-20229 Works
The vulnerability exists in Splunk Enterprise and Splunk Cloud Platform where improper authorization checks allow low-privileged users to upload malicious files to “$SPLUNK_HOME/var/run/splunk/apptemp” directory. Attackers can exploit this by crafting a specially designed file that gets executed by Splunk’s application framework. The lack of proper role validation (“admin” or “power” roles) enables unauthorized users to achieve remote code execution with the privileges of the Splunk service account. This occurs during the temporary file handling process where uploaded files are not properly sanitized before execution.
