How the CVE Works
CVE-2025-20231 is a privilege escalation flaw in Splunk Enterprise (versions below 9.4.1, 9.3.3, 9.2.5, 9.1.8) and Splunk Secure Gateway (versions below 3.8.38, 3.7.23). A low-privileged authenticated user can craft a malicious search query, tricking a higher-privileged user into executing it via phishing (e.g., clicking a link). The search then runs with elevated permissions, potentially exposing sensitive data. The attack requires user interaction and cannot be triggered autonomously.
