Samsung Mobile Processor Exynos 1280 and 2200, NULL Pointer Dereference, CVE-2025-54326

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2025-54326 vulnerability stems from a flaw in the camera device driver for Samsung Exynos 1280 and 2200 mobile processors. During driver initialization, there is an unnecessary registration of a hardware IP address. This incorrect registration leads to a critical pointer being set to NULL when it should point to a valid memory address. When the camera hardware is accessed, the driver attempts to use this pointer without proper validation. Specifically, during operations like interrupt handling or memory mapping, the driver dereferences the NULL pointer. This causes a kernel-level NULL pointer dereference error. The dereference triggers an immediate system crash or kernel panic. The result is a complete denial of service, rendering the device unusable until reboot. The vulnerability is exploitable by any application or process with permissions to access the camera hardware. An attacker can craft malicious software that repeatedly invokes camera functions, such as starting preview or capturing images. This action forces the driver to traverse the faulty code path, leading to the NULL pointer dereference. The issue is persistent and can be triggered multiple times, causing recurrent crashes. The root cause is inadequate error handling and resource management in the driver code. The unnecessary IP registration should be avoided or accompanied by robust NULL checks. Debugging logs may show errors related to camera driver initialization before crashes. Mitigation requires patching the driver to remove the superfluous registration or adding pointer validation. Samsung is expected to address this through firmware updates for affected devices.
