How the CVE works:
The vulnerability resides in the SyncClientProvider component of Samsung Internet browser when installed on non-Samsung devices. Due to improper validation of permissions, the provider does not enforce adequate access controls. Local attackers can exploit this by sending crafted intents or requests to the provider. These requests manipulate file paths to bypass permission checks. This allows arbitrary file read and write operations on device storage. The provider is exposed to other apps without sufficient security restrictions. Attackers with local access, such as through a malicious app, can interact with it. This flaw is specific to non-Samsung devices where security integrations may differ. Exploitation requires no special privileges, only local app installation. The vulnerability stems from insufficient permission handling in the provider’s code. It affects versions prior to 28.0.0.59. Attackers can access sensitive files, including system and user data. This can lead to information disclosure or system corruption. The provider handles file synchronization operations. Improper input validation allows path traversal attacks. Local apps can invoke the provider with malicious parameters. This grants unauthorized file access capabilities. The vulnerability is critical due to the potential for complete device compromise. It highlights the risks of exported providers with weak permissions.
