The vulnerability resides within the function responsible for decoding the SOR (Service Order Routing) transparent container in the modem/baseband firmware of the affected Exynos chipsets. This function fails to perform proper bounds checking on the incoming container data. An attacker can craft a malicious network packet containing a specially designed SOR container. When this packet is received and processed by the vulnerable modem, the decoding routine reads data beyond the intended buffer boundaries due to the lack of validation. This memory corruption leads to a fatal error, crashing the modem subsystem and causing a denial of service. In a more sophisticated attack, carefully controlled overflow data could potentially allow for remote code execution on the modem processor, granting significant control over device communications.
Platform: Samsung Exynos Processors
Version: 980, 990, 850, 2100, 1280, 2200, 1330, 1380, 1480, 2400, 1580, 2500, W920, W930, W1000, Modem 5123, Modem 5300, Modem 5400
Vulnerability: Buffer Overflow
Severity: Critical
Date: 2025-12-03
Prediction: 2026-Q1 Patch
What Undercode Say:
adb shell getprop ro.boot.bootloader strings modem.bin | grep -i "sor" xxd -p malformed_sor_packet.bin
// Hypothetical vulnerable function structure
void decode_sor_container(uint8_t data, uint32_t length) {
uint8_t local_buffer[bash];
memcpy(local_buffer, data, length); // No bounds check
}
How Exploit:
1. Attacker crafts malicious radio packet.
2. Packet contains oversized SOR container.
3. Target device modem processes packet.
4. Decode function overflows stack buffer.
5. Modem crashes or executes attacker code.
