Rust Standard Library, Remote Code Execution, CVE-2024-24576 (Critical) -DC-Oct2026-3146

Listen to this Post

CVE-2024-24576 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability residing within the Rust standard library on Windows systems, specifically impacting how the `Command::arg` and `Command::args` APIs handle argument escaping when invoking batch files (.bat and `.cmd` extensions). While Rust documentation explicitly guarantees that arguments are passed to spawned processes as-is without shell evaluation, `cmd.exe` implements unique and complex argument-splitting logic that differs from standard C run-time parsing. Because the standard library’s custom escaping implementation was insufficiently robust, an attacker capable of controlling arguments passed to a spawned process could break out of context, bypass the escaping mechanism, and execute arbitrary shell commands. This flaw compromises applications that take untrusted external input and invoke system batch files, potentially leading to total system compromise on affected Windows platforms.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Windows OS
Version: Prior to 1.77.2
Vulnerability : Command Injection
Severity: Critical
date: April 9 2024

Prediction: April 9 2024

What Undercode Say:

Bash Commands and Code Snippets

use std::process::Command;
fn vulnerable_function(user_input: &str) {
// Spawning batch files with untrusted input prior to patch
Command::new("script.bat")
.arg(user_input)
.spawn()
.unwrap();
}

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

// Injecting malicious shell commands via crafted batch arguments
let payload = &"& calc.exe";
Command::new("script.bat").arg(payload).spawn();

Protection: from this CVE

Upgrade the Rust toolchain to version 1.77.2 or later where the standard library safely rejects unescapable inputs or uses improved escaping logic, and avoid passing untrusted data directly to batch scripts via Command.

Impact:

Allows attackers to execute arbitrary system commands with the privileges of the running application when processing untrusted inputs on Windows.
