How the CVE Works:
The vulnerability (CVE-2025-XXXX) in Rust’s `memory_pages` crate v0.1.0 arises due to improper input validation when calculating memory page allocations. A zero-value denominator in arithmetic operations triggers a division-by-zero panic, crashing the application. This occurs in functions handling page-size calculations, where unchecked user or system input propagates into division logic. Attackers could exploit this by forcing a zero divisor, leading to denial-of-service (DoS).
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Rust `memory_pages`
Version: 0.1.0
Vulnerability: Division by zero
Severity: Low
Date: May 24, 2025
Prediction: Patch expected by June 7, 2025
What Undercode Say:
Exploitation:
- Trigger Crash: Craft input forcing `memory_pages` to compute with zero divisor.
let pages = memory_pages::calculate(0); // Triggers panic
2. Fuzzing: Use fuzzers to identify unchecked divisions:
cargo fuzz run memory_pages_divide
Protection:
1. Input Validation:
if divisor == 0 { return Err("Division by zero"); }
2. Patch Check:
cargo update -p memory_pages
3. Mitigation: Fork and patch locally:
[patch.crates-io]
memory_pages = { git = "https://patched/repo" }
Analytics:
- Impact: Low (DoS, no RCE).
- Affected Systems: Rust apps using
memory_pages = "0.1.0". - Detection: Static analysis with
cargo-audit:cargo install cargo-audit && cargo audit
Code Fix Example:
// Before (vulnerable):
pub fn calculate_pages(size: usize) -> usize {
size / PAGE_SIZE // PAGE_SIZE could be 0
}
// After (patched):
pub fn calculate_pages(size: usize) -> Option<usize> {
if PAGE_SIZE == 0 { None } else { Some(size / PAGE_SIZE) }
}
Monitoring:
watch -n 60 "cargo audit | grep memory_pages"
