CVE-2024-21626 is a critical file descriptor leak vulnerability found in runc <=1.1.11, affecting containerization solutions like Docker and Kubernetes. The core issue stems from an order of operations flaw during container initialization, where internal file descriptors remain open when setcwd(2) is performed. This enables an attacker to manipulate the container working directory via file descriptor paths, allowing processes inside the container to escape their isolated environment, access the underlying host filesystem, overwrite host binaries, and achieve full root command execution on the host operating system.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Linux Runc Container
Version: Vers <=1.1.11
Vulnerability : File Descriptor Leak
Severity: Critical
date: 2024-01-31
Prediction: 2024-02-01
What Undercode Say
git clone https://github.com/snyk/leaky-vessels-static-detector cd leaky-vessels-static-detector go build . ./static-detector dockerfile -f Dockerfile
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
An attacker creates a malicious container image or Dockerfile leveraging a working directory configured via a file descriptor reference. When runc runs or executes an exec command, the leaked file descriptor allows the container process to resolve paths outside the chroot jail, mounting or referencing host directories directly. This grants attackers unauthorized read and write access to the host file system, leading to arbitrary code execution and complete host compromise.
Protection: from this CVE
Upgrade the runc package immediately to version 1.1.12 or later. Ensure that container orchestrators and runtime engines (such as Docker and Kubernetes) are updated with their respective vendor patches. As a temporary workaround when immediate patching is impossible, configure containers and execution parameters to use a process current working directory of strictly root (/).
Impact:
Successful exploitation results in total container breakout, unauthorized exposure of sensitive host files, data leakage, data modification, and complete administrative control takeover of the host operating system by malicious actors.
