How the mentioned CVE works:
The vulnerability exists in Renovate’s Kustomize manager when processing Helm chart dependencies. When Renovate encounters a `kustomization.yaml` file configured to inflate Helm charts (postUpdateOptions: kustomizeInflateHelmCharts), it fetches chart metadata from a Helm repository’s index.yaml. The chart name from this index file is passed to the `helmRepositoryArgs` function in lib/modules/manager/kustomize/artifacts.ts. The value for the `depName` argument is directly concatenated into a `helm pull –untar` shell command without being sanitized by the `shlex.quote` function. An attacker with commit access can create a malicious `index.yaml` entry where the chart name contains shell metacharacters (e.g., example || kill 1; echo). When Renovate processes this chart, the unescaped chart name is inserted into the shell command, allowing arbitrary command execution in the context of the Renovate process.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Renovate
Version: 39.218.9+
Vulnerability: Command Injection
Severity: Critical
Date: 2025-03-26
Prediction: 2025-04-15
What Undercode Say:
Analytics:
Malicious index.yaml entry echo 'apiVersion: v1 entries: "example || kill 1; echo": - version: 1.0.0' > index.yaml Malicious kustomization.yaml cat > kustomization.yaml << EOF kind: Kustomization helmCharts: - name: "example || kill 1; echo" repo: https://malicious.repo version: 1.0.0 EOF Running Renovate (example) docker run --rm -v $(pwd):/repo renovate/renovate
How Exploit:
1. Host malicious `index.yaml`.
2. Commit poisoned `kustomization.yaml`.
3. Trigger Renovate scan.
4. Execute arbitrary commands.
Protection from this CVE:
Update Renovate version.
Sanitize chart names.
