How the CVE works: The vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write in the PCX image codec within QNX SDP versions 8.0, 7.1, and 7.0. When processing a PCX image file, the codec fails to validate input data from the file header, such as image dimensions or palette size. This leads to incorrect buffer size calculations, allowing data to be written beyond the allocated memory boundary. An attacker can craft a malicious PCX file with manipulated values to trigger this write, corrupting adjacent memory structures. Depending on the controlled data and memory layout, this corruption can cause a process crash (denial-of-service) or overwrite critical pointers like function addresses. By hijacking the instruction pointer, an attacker may execute arbitrary code within the context of the process using the codec. The vulnerability is exploitable by unauthenticated attackers through file upload or network services that decode PCX images, posing significant risk in embedded systems where QNX is commonly deployed.
