Podman introduced a capability allowing container checkpoints to be distributed via OCI registries and executed directly using standard container runtime commands. However, this feature created a significant security boundary violation because checkpoint archives contain complete definitions of container creation parameters, including sandbox configurations and Linux capabilities. When the runtime detects a checkpoint image via specific internal annotations, it silently overrides and ignores user-supplied sandbox arguments such as capability restrictions or security hardening drops. Consequently, an attacker can supply a malicious checkpoint image that forces execution with elevated privileges and full capabilities, entirely bypassing administrative controls and security policies. Due to the inherent risk of conflating standard container images with executable checkpoints, maintainers decided to completely remove this risky functionality through direct patch reversions.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Podman
Version: 4.4.0-5.8.8
Vulnerability : Sandbox Bypass
Severity: Critical
date: 2026-10-13
Prediction: 2026-10-13
What Undercode Say
podman run --cap-drop=ALL malicious-checkpoint-image:latest podman container checkpoint --export container_name checkpoint.tar
How Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
An attacker creates a malicious container checkpoint encapsulating elevated Linux capabilities and root privileges, then pushes the resulting image to an accessible OCI registry. When an unsuspecting administrator or user pulls and executes the image using normal run commands, Podman identifies the internal checkpoint annotation and silently bypasses user-specified security flags like capability drops, granting full host-level access to the container process.
Protection: from this CVE
Upgrade Podman immediately to fixed versions 5.8.8 or 6.1.3 where the vulnerable checkpoint distribution feature has been fully reverted and removed. As a temporary workaround, manually scan incoming OCI images for the checkpoint runtime annotation and reject any unauthorized images containing it.
Impact
Allows malicious container images distributed through public or private registries to completely override user sandbox restrictions, bypass capability drops, execute with full administrative privileges, and compromise host security boundaries.
