How the Mentioned CVE Works:
The in-memory stored Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Pinecone Simulator (pineconesim) arises due to improper sanitization of user-supplied input. When malicious JavaScript payloads are injected into the application, they are stored in the application’s memory. These payloads are then executed when other users access the affected functionality. Although the payloads are not permanently stored (they are wiped upon restarting pineconesim), they can still cause harm during the application’s runtime. This vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the victim’s browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, data theft, or unauthorized actions.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Pinecone Simulator
Version: Up to commit matrix-org/pinecone@ea4c337
Vulnerability: Stored XSS
Severity: Moderate
Date: Mar 4, 2025
What Undercode Say:
Exploitation:
- Payload Injection: Inject malicious JavaScript into user-input fields.
<script>alert('XSS');</script> - Execution: The payload executes when another user accesses the affected page.
- Impact: Steal session cookies, redirect users, or perform unauthorized actions.
Protection:
- Input Sanitization: Use libraries like DOMPurify to sanitize user inputs.
import DOMPurify from 'dompurify'; const cleanInput = DOMPurify.sanitize(userInput);
- Content Security Policy (CSP): Implement CSP headers to restrict script execution.
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; script-src 'self';
- Patch Application: Update to the fixed version (commit matrix-org/pinecone@218b280).
Commands:
1. Check Current Version:
git log -1
2. Apply Patch:
git fetch origin git checkout 218b280
References:
Analytics:
- Affected Users: All users running pineconesim up to commit
ea4c337. - Risk Level: Moderate due to transient payload storage.
- Mitigation Difficulty: Low, as patches are available.
Additional Code:
1. CSP Header Example:
app.use((req, res, next) => {
res.setHeader("Content-Security-Policy", "default-src 'self'; script-src 'self'");
next();
});
2. Input Validation:
function validateInput(input) {
return input.replace(/<script.?>.?<\/script>/gi, '');
}
By following these steps, users can mitigate the risk posed by this vulnerability and secure their applications.
