The vulnerability in the Pepr Kubernetes framework arises from its default RBAC configuration set to “admin” mode in the rbac.ts asset file. This default is designed for frictionless onboarding with demo modules like hello-pepr.ts, granting the Pepr controller the cluster-admin ClusterRole upon deployment. When users execute the build command without specifying the scoped RBAC mode, the generated manifests embed these broad privileges. This misconfiguration is exploitable if users bypass documentation and deploy production modules using the default build process, inadvertently granting excessive cluster-wide permissions. The framework delegates RBAC scope responsibility to module authors, but the default behavior can lead to insecure deployments. Exploitation requires building and applying modules with the default settings, potentially allowing malicious or compromised modules full cluster access. The low severity is due to Pepr being a framework where users must actively choose deployment options, and the intended fix involves logging warnings to alert users of the non-production default.
