Pagekit CMS, Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR), Critical

Listen to this Post

The Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) vulnerability in Pagekit CMS v1.0.18 resides within the User Role component, allowing unauthorized privilege escalation. This flaw occurs when the application exposes direct references to internal objects, such as user or role identifiers, without implementing proper access controls. Attackers can manipulate these references, typically via HTTP request parameters, to access or modify data belonging to other users or higher-privileged roles. For instance, by altering a ‘role_id’ parameter in a POST or GET request, an attacker could assign administrative privileges to their own account. The application fails to verify if the authenticated user has permission to perform the requested action on the target object. This lack of server-side authorization checks enables attackers to bypass intended security measures. The vulnerability is exploitable through direct API endpoints or web interfaces that handle user role management. Given that Pagekit CMS is a content management system, successful exploitation can lead to full site compromise, including content alteration, user account takeover, and system configuration changes. The critical severity stems from the ease of attack and the high impact of privilege escalation. Since the project was archived on December 1, 2023, no official fixes are being developed, leaving installations permanently at risk if not mitigated through external means.
