How CVE-2026-60168 Works

CVE-2026-60168 is a critical vulnerability affecting the Oracle Hospitality Simphony product, specifically within the POS component’s EGateway Printing Handler module. Discovered and responsibly disclosed by Horizon3.ai researcher Jimi Sebree, this flaw was addressed in Oracle’s July 2026 Critical Patch Update.
The vulnerability stems from insufficient validation of attacker-controlled input before file operations are performed by the EGateway Printing Handler. An unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP can submit specially crafted requests that cause arbitrary files to be written to the underlying host system.
The exploitation chain works as follows: The EGateway Printing Handler processes print job requests received over HTTP. Due to improper input sanitization, an attacker can manipulate parameters within these requests to control the destination path and content of files written by the handler. Because the handler typically runs with elevated privileges on the Simphony host, the attacker can write files to arbitrary locations on the filesystem.
Oracle assigned two separate CVEs (CVE-2026-60168 and CVE-2026-60169) to distinct weaknesses within the processing chain that, when combined, create a single arbitrary file write condition. Successful exploitation enables an attacker to write attacker-controlled files, establish persistence on the compromised host, prepare the system for subsequent code execution, and facilitate additional compromise.
The vulnerability is easily exploitable with low attack complexity, requiring no privileges and no user interaction. It carries a CVSS 3.1 Base Score of 9.1 (CRITICAL) with the vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H. This indicates significant integrity and availability impacts—unauthorized modification or deletion of critical data and complete denial of service through system hang or repeatable crash.
Affected versions include Oracle Hospitality Simphony 19.8 through 19.8.5, 19.9 through 19.9.3, and 19.10. Exploit

The exploitation of CVE-2026-60168 follows a structured approach:

  1. Initial Access: The attacker sends a crafted HTTP request to the EGateway Printing Handler endpoint. No authentication is required.
  2. Path Manipulation: The request contains manipulated parameters that bypass input validation, allowing the attacker to specify an arbitrary file path on the underlying host system.
  3. File Write Execution: The EGateway Printing Handler, operating with system-level privileges, writes attacker-controlled content to the specified path.
  4. Post-Exploitation: With arbitrary file write capability, the attacker can:

– Write a web shell to accessible web directories for remote code execution
– Overwrite critical configuration files to disable security controls
– Establish persistence by writing scheduled tasks or startup scripts
– Prepare the system for subsequent code execution by dropping malicious binaries

Protection

Immediate Remediation:

  • Apply Oracle’s July 2026 Critical Patch Update (CPU) released on July 22, 2026. This patch addresses CVE-2026-60168 along with three related vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-60167, CVE-2026-60169, CVE-2026-60170).

Network Mitigations:

  • Restrict network access to the EGateway Printing Handler to only trusted internal IP addresses
  • Implement network segmentation to isolate Simphony POS systems from broader corporate networks
  • Deploy Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to detect and block path traversal patterns in HTTP requests

Host-Level Protections:

  • Harden the Simphony host filesystem by restricting write permissions for the service account
